Giants

TODO: more sources explaining the Giants specifically
TODO: more sources connecting Dactyls to Giants to Magi

Intro

The Dactyls, Giants, and Magi are not separate traditions, but connected streams in the lineage of mystery technicians, those who handled the divine pharmakon (drug, charm, spell) and the mystery fire.

The Dactyls (Δάκτυλοι)

Meaning: “Fingers,” from δάκτυλος, referring to the ten initiates or sorcerer-smiths of Mount Ida in Phrygia or Crete.
They are the first magicians, inventors of metallurgy, and keepers of ecstatic rites.

Sources:

Strabo 10.3.22–25 (H. L. Jones (ed.), Strabo, Loeb Classical Library, vol. V (1928).)

“The Dactyls were the first to discover and work iron and were magicians and initiates of the Mother of the Gods.”
Connects the Idaean Dactyls with the Curetes, Corybantes, and Kabeiroi, all ecstatic initiatory orders associated with Rhea and the Great Mother (Meter).

Clement of Alexandria, Stromata 1.16.75.2: (Scaife / Perseus collections)
“The Dactyls of Ida, the first to discover the use of fire in metalworking, also taught the mysteries.”
They are fire-workers and musical healers - each “finger” representing rhythmic magical power, drumming, or the beating of metal (techne and teletē joined).

Term:

  • δακτύλῳ (Dactyl) - Giant, aka Magi
    • the Dactyloi (Δάκτυλοι), the Cretan/Phrygian magi and metalworkers who discovered fire and pharmaka;
    • agents of initiation, the “fingers” through which the divine power is administered - literally through touch, salve, gesture, chant.
  • δαιμόνια (Daimonia) - daimon - personal inner forces of character, emotion, and fate. a mediator of energy, an unseen presence shaping thought, desire, and impulse. δαιμόνια are the inner psychic forces, inner archtypes or personas that compete with 'self'. psychic and physiological influences-the impurities or turbulences within that obscure the "divine presence".
  • βασιλεία (Basileia) - *divine dominion, the altered state. kingdom (realm) of the divine (based on the pharmakon rite)

The Dactyl administers catharsis (κάθαρσις) - the tactile, rhythmic, or pharmacological act

The Giants (Γίγαντες)

Meaning: “Earth-born,” from γῆ (earth).
They are the chthonic counterparts of the celestial gods, beings of elemental power.
In Orphic and mystery cosmology, the Giants are powers of the deep, sometimes daimones that must be subdued or reconciled through the rite.

Connection to Dactyls:

  • The Dactyls are often said to be the sons of the Idaean Mother, just as the Giants are children of Gaia.
  • Both are earth-born, both linked to metal, fire, and ecstatic noise.
  • In Nonnus (Dionysiaca 13.135ff), the Giants are subdued by Dionysos, who uses drugs, serpent symbols, and frenzy - exactly the Dactylic pharmakeia.

Thus, Dactyls = constructive initiates of the fire,
Giants = chaotic raw energies of the same chthonic current.

The Magi (Μάγοι)

Meaning: Persian initiates or priests of the Magian cult of fire and the stars.
By Hellenistic times, magos simply meant ritual expert, exorcist, or wonder-worker - as in the Gospels.

Sources:

Herodotus Histories 1.101:

  • lists the Magi among the Median tribes, priests of the Persian religion.

Plato, Alcibiades I 122a:

  • “The Magian art is the service of the gods through rites and purification.”

Pliny, Nat. Hist. 30.2:

  • traces magia from Zoroaster and says it “spread from Persia to the Greeks through Orpheus.”

The Magi and Dactyls share:

  • mastery of fire (Zoroastrian sacred fire / Dactylic forge fire)
  • purification through sound, rhythm, and drug (chant, incantation, incense)
  • knowledge

Bridges in Textual Tradition

Orphic Hymn to the Kabeiroi (39):
“O holy Kabeiroi, who dwell in the sacred fires of Samothrace, initiators of mortals into sacred rites…”
The Kabeiroi are the descendants or transformations of the Dactyls.Their mysteries taught protection, purification, and resurrection - magian themes.

Hesychius, Lexicon (ed. by Liddel, etc.) under "Δάκτυλοι Ἰδαῖοι":
“They are magicians (μάγοι) and wise men (σοφοί).”
This explicitly unites Dactyls = Magi.

Cultural Transmission Chain

Phrygian / Cretan Dactyls → Samothracian Kabeiroi → Orphic initiates → Pythagorean catharsis → Hellenistic Magi

Each preserves:

  • ecstatic music (rhythmos, ekstasis)
  • pharmacological purification (drugs, incense, fire)
  • exorcistic theurgy (casting out daimones through rhythm and formula)

In the Gospel Context

When Jesus is accused of casting out daimones “by Beelzeboul,” the Judeans are accusing him of practicing a Dactylic-Magian art - an ecstatic pharmakeia derived from this lineage of fire-workers and exorcists.
His “casting out” is exactly what the Dactyls and Magi claimed to do: rhythmically drive out or transform daimones (inner forces) through the sacred art of teletē.

Luke 11:17-20 (Nestle GNT 1904)

17 But he, knowing their inner thoughts, said to them: “Every kingdom divided against itself becomes desolate, and house falls upon house.”
18 “And if even the Satanas has been divided against himself, how will his dominion (rule) stand? For you say that I cast out the daimonia by Beelzeboul.”
19 “But if I cast out the daimonia in the power of Beelzeboul, by what do your sons cast them out? Therefore they will be your judges.”
20 In the finger of the divine (god) I cast out daimonia, if I do this, then the dominion (rule) of the divine (god) has come upon you.

Phrases:

  • ἐν Βεελζεβοὺλ ἐκβάλλειν με τὰ δαιμόνια - “that I expel the daimonia in (or by) Beelzeboul.” Implies using one daimonic current to drive out another - a familiar pattern in magical and initiatory language, where one purifies through a stronger current of divine frenzy or pharmakon.
  • ἐν δακτύλῳ Θεοῦ (en daktulou theou) - in the finger of the divinity (god)
  • ἐκβάλλω τὰ δαιμόνια (ekballou ta daimonia) - purging inner daimonic influences

Terms:

  • Σατανᾶς (Satanas) - satan. adversarial impulse, the inner principle of division - what opposes unity or harmony within the psyche
  • διεμερίσθη (dielmeristhē) - “has been divided, split, dismembered.” The word evokes Dionysian sparagmos, the dismembering of "the god" (or of one’s inner unity) during ecstatic frenzy.
  • βασιλεία (basileia) - the dominion, realm, or state of rulership, here symbolizing the psychic (or divine order) established when inner forces are harmonized.
  • Βεελζεβοὺλ (beelzeboul) - beelzebub. lord of ecstatic madness
  • δακτύλῳ (Dactyl) - Giant, aka Magi
    • the Dactyloi (Δάκτυλοι), the Cretan/Phrygian magi and metalworkers who discovered fire and pharmaka;

The Daimonia are the inner agents to be pacified, transmuted, or sublimated,
The Basileia is the ensuing dominion or state of divine consciousness.
